Breastfeeding with maternal antiretroviral therapy or formula feeding to prevent HIV postnatal mother-to-child transmission in Rwanda

This is the first study to compare HIV transmission to newborns when their mothers were given the choice to either breastfeed exclusively while receiving HAART or formula-feed. Both methods resulted in excellent outcomes in terms of HIV-transmission and mortality. This article finds that breast-feeding, when combined with maternal HAART, can be associated with a minimal risk of postnatal transmission.
